After the Fees

For small handmade shops

After the FeesWhat one listing really keeps

A $32 mug is not $32 in your pocket. Enter one listing and the page prints the receipt of a single sale: every marketplace fee, your materials, postage and time, and what is left. Then see the price that breaks even, the price that hits your margin, and how far a coupon can go.

4 The pricing read

One run reads your numbers and notes and suggests the price to move to, why a buyer pays it, how far a coupon can go, free or charged shipping, what offsite ads mean here and three to five steps.

          How the page counts

What the buyer pays is the list price less any coupon, plus the shipping you charge. The transaction fee (6.5% by default), payment processing (3% + 0.25) and the offsite ads fee (15% or 12%, capped per order) are all charged on that total. The listing fee (0.20) is charged once per sale. Sales tax is left out.

What you keep is that total less every fee, materials, postage and packaging, and your time (minutes times your hourly rate). The margin is what you keep as a share of what the buyer pays. A listing loses money below zero, is under target below your target margin, and is on target otherwise.

Break-even and target prices are the lowest list prices, with your coupon, that keep zero profit or your target margin. The coupon grid shows a direct sale and an offsite-ad sale at every step. The expected profit weights the two by the share of sales you think come from offsite ads.

The page's check. After a pricing read, the page recomputes the suggested price and coupon with these same sums and lists anything that disagrees - a price under break-even, a coupon that loses money, a verdict that does not match the price.

Pricing guidance, not tax or accounting advice. Fee rates change and differ by country and shop; confirm them on your own fee page.
